iPhone Bible - YouVersion

Posted by Chaplain Jeff Lucas on February 16, 2011 at 12:55 AM

There are many Christian Bible iPhone Apps out there. Many are completely free courtesy the ministry that has produced it. Some have free Bible texts with a version, usually King James Version (KJV), and a few basic extras. These apps will then charge some kind of fee for add-ons like commentaries, dictionaries, study guides, etc. A third kind of Bible apps are full-blown Bible Study Systems. They can literally be a complete theological book case in your iPhone; for a price.

I have been comparing different Bible apps for some time now. I’m not going to endorse any one app over another. That would be a matter of opinion. My opinion really doesn’t matter. What truly matters, when its time for the rubber to meet the road, is how a particular Bible app works for you. Having looked at several different ones, I will occasionally tell you what I have discovered so you might be more informed before making a sizable investment in an app that may not suit you.

One of the free Bible apps I find myself coming back to often is the YouVersion. This is a feature rich, completely free Bible app. In addition to KJV, there is almost every translation in the English language. There are a great many translations throughout a large spectrum of the World’s different languages. Most of which can be downloaded for offline use or read online while connected to the internet.

The YouVersion Bible app has an abundant amount of reading plans organized in just about any method of which you can think; over sixty.

Other features include search, note taking, bookmarking and reading history. You can chose from various settings to tailor how you would like the app to function. You can even sign up for notifications when new translations are available for download.

All in all, this is a very good basic Bible app that is completely free of charge. The user interface is simple and allows you to find what you need and start reading. YouVersion is a great personal devotional Bible for those who may not be able to carry their hardcopy Bible. It’s definitely a keeper.

Be Safe, Be Blessed,

Chaplain Jeff
